6 Month Old Still Not Sleeping Through the Night Because of Developmental Changes

A 6 month old still not sleeping through the night can be attributed to significant developmental changes. At this age, babies may experience rapid brain development. And this leads to increased awareness and sensitivity to their surroundings. Their growing cognitive abilities can cause frequent night waking as they process new information. If your baby doesn’t have the skills to put themselves back to sleep, that can lead to some long nights.

Six-month-olds typically go through physical milestones like rolling over, sitting up, or even starting to crawl. Any of these can disrupt their sleep patterns. These newfound skills may make them more restless during the night. Because they are waking practice and adjust to their bodies’ changes. As a result, you may find your 6-month-old waking up more frequently and struggling to settle back to sleep.

Additionally, around six months, many babies can begin teething. Teeth can be a cause of a 6 month old not sleeping well. It can cause discomfort and pain, further disrupting their sleep. The discomfort from teething can make it challenging for infants to self-soothe and stay asleep throughout the night.

Furthermore, at 6 months old, babies may also begin to experience separation anxiety. And this can make it difficult for them to settle and sleep independently. This newfound awareness of being separate from their primary caregivers can lead to increased clinginess. And it can also lead to a need for reassurance during the night.

As a result, infants may wake up more frequently seeking comfort and closeness from their parents, contributing to disrupted sleep patterns. Understanding and responding to these emotional needs with patience and consistency can help alleviate some of the challenges associated with a 6 month old still not sleeping through the night.

6 Month Old Not Sleeping Due to Sleep Associations

Imagine your baby falling asleep in your arms while being rocked or with their bottle. This routine becomes their “sleep association.” A sleep association is formed when your baby gets dependent on needing something from you in order to fall asleep. The problem with sleep associations is that when they wake up at night, they need the same conditions to fall back asleep.

Think of it from their perspective. They fell asleep in your arms being snuggled or they were attached to your breast. Now they’re all alone in the crib and aren’t sucking on anything anymore. They’re not going to be happy.

In fact, they’re going to be quite upset. Because things aren’t the way they were when they fell asleep. It’ like if you were to fall asleep in your bed but wake up on the ground in your backyard. Would you be upset and quite uneasy? I know I would be.


So, if they’re not in that environment, they struggle to sleep again. That’s why your 6 month old may still not be sleeping through the night. These associations can lead to frequent nighttime awakenings and poor sleep for both you and your baby.

As babies become more aware of their surroundings at this age, they may easily get disturbed during sleep transitions. This heightened awareness makes it challenging for them to settle back to sleep independently when they wake up during the night. Thus, parents often find their 6 month old still not sleeping through the night due to these associations.

Don’t worry, I’m going to walk you through how to help your 6 month old establish healthier sleep habits in a gentle way. And we’ll start with bedtime.

Bedtime for 6 Month Old

The ideal bedtime for a 6 month old typically falls between 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. I find the sweet spot often falling around 7:00 PM. At this age, a 6 month old still not sleeping through the night typically requires approximately 14-15 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period. This amount includes  both daytime naps and nighttime sleep.

While the idea of a 7:00 PM bedtime might initially seem remarkably early from an adult perspective, it actually aligns with your baby’s natural circadian rhythm. By following this timing, you’re helping reset their internal body clock. And this will help with smoother transitions into sleep. Having a later bedtime may result in your 6 month old fighting sleep. This happens when they’re kept awake past the point when their body signals readiness for rest.


Is swaddling a newborn necessary


To determine the best bedtime for your 6 month old, observe their sleep patterns over the span of a week or two. Look for cues indicating drowsiness and aim to establish a consistent bedtime routine around this time. By doing so, you’re not only fostering healthy sleep habits but also providing your baby with a comforting and predictable pre-sleep ritual.

Creating a bedtime routine tailored to your 6 month old’s needs can serve as a powerful signal that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Your routine might involve activities like a warm bath, their bedtime feed, and reading a bedtime story.

However, it’s important to keep the duration of the routine in check. Aim for the total time of their bedtime routine to be no longer than 30 to 40 minutes. This will prevent your baby from becoming overtired, which can impede their ability to fall asleep smoothly.

6 Month Old Still Not Sleeping Through the Night Because of Overtiredness

Ensuring proper awake windows is vital for a 6 month old’s sleep routine. Your 6 month old still not sleeping through the night will benefit from following proper awake windows. A 6 month old should only be awake between 2 to 3 hours at a time. This balance between awake time and sleep time helps your baby feel rested and refreshed. And that will contribute to better sleep quality.

If your 6 month old is kept awake for too long, they will get overtired. And that’s a problem because it will be more challenging for them to fall asleep and stay asleep. This overtiredness can lead to more nighttime awakenings and difficulty settling back to sleep. It can also cause shorter naps, maybe only 20 – 30 minutes. On the other hand, if you put your baby into their crib too soon, they may take quite some time to finally settle.


Following appropriate awake windows is important for establishing healthy sleep habits and preventing wakings . I recommend keeping a close eye on your 6 month old’s sleep cues and adjusting their awake windows accordingly.  Typically, a 6 month old baby’s awake window lasts around 2 to 3 hours. But their awake windows will depend on their individual needs and temperament. 

If you’re seeing tired cues before that, it’s also ok to put them down a little sooner. Here are some common tired cues for 6 month olds:

» Rubbing their face into objects like your shoulder or a blanket

 Incorporating adequate awake time into your baby’s daily schedule can also help regulate their nap frequency. A typical 6 month old should be taking 2 to 3 naps a day. Most babies are ready to make the transition to 2 naps a day between 5 – 8 months of age. Ideally, each nap should last between around 1.5  to 2 hours.

However, you’re having shorter naps or increased fussiness, you may need to bump bedtime up to prevent overtiredness. Bedtime can be up to a full hour earlier if need be to stay within proper awake windows. 

6 Month Old Fighting Sleep

Establishing a serene sleep sanctuary for your 6 month old can really help them sleep longer. If your 6 month old still not sleeping through the night, prioritizing a conducive sleeping environment can help. Begin by ensuring that their sleeping space is quiet, cool, and dark, providing the optimal conditions for quality sleep.

Select a comfortable and supportive crib or bassinet, free of loose blankets, pillows, or toys that could pose a suffocation hazard. Keep the sleeping area clutter-free. This creates a safe and secure space for your baby to rest peacefully. I find that keeping the temperature in the room between 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. A temperature in this range helps regulate your 6 month old’s body temperature and keep them comfortable.

Invest in blackout window covers or blackout curtains will help to block out excess light. Darkness signals to your baby’s body that it’s time to rest. And keep in mind that when your baby was in the womb, they were used to darkness 24 hours a day. It was their comfort zone. A dark room helps to bring them back to that womb-like experience.

Furthermore, consider incorporating a white noise machine into your baby’s sleep routine. White noise provides a consistent and soothing background sound that masks external noises, promoting uninterrupted sleep for your little one.

Think about how the dump truck comes by in the early morning hours a few days a week or noisy neighbors talking too close to your baby’s window. Think of the white noise as a buffer between the outside world and your baby’s sleep.

Avoid Screens

Avoiding screens is crucial for a 6 month old’s sleep routine. Screens emit blue light, which can disrupt sleep by suppressing melatonin production. Exposing a 6 month old to screens before bedtime can interfere with their ability to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Additionally, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends no screen time for babies under 18 months. This guidance emphasizes the importance of limiting screen exposure to promote healthy development and sleep patterns.

 Excessive screen time has been associated with delays in language development, cognitive skills, and social interactions in young children. Additionally, screens can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to difficulties in falling asleep and staying asleep.

Establishing a soothing bedtime routine without screens can signal to your baby that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Prioritizing screen-free time before bedtime sets the stage for a peaceful and restful night’s sleep for your little one. And this is a great habit that they can carry with them into adulthood.
